During the spring 2018 semester, American University announced it has reached carbon neutrality, a goal set eight years ago. Hoping to reach its goal by 2020, the university not only achieved its goal two years ahead of schedule but also became the first US university to become carbon neutral.

Students contributed to this achievement by attending zero-waste events and participating in competitions to reduce waste on campus. Further, faculty incorporated the topic of sustainability into their curricula, and staff engaged in the Green Office program to learn how to perform their daily work in a more sustainable, environmentally friendly way.

American University sources half of its electricity from a solar farm in North Carolina, and the institution features eight buildings with green roofs and six buildings certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The university remains committed to sustaining these and other efforts to serve as a model for other universities throughout the country.
